Central Africa Medal 1891-98, with clasp, 'Central Africa 1894-98', awarded to Corporal Nderamani, Central African Regiment
Circular, silver medal designed by Leonard Charles Wyon (obverse) and SIr Edward John Poynter (reverse), with a portrait of Queen Victoria and the inscription, 'Victoria Regina', on the obverse. On the reverse, a scene of jungle or forest warfare. The edge is inscribed with recipient's name, rank and unit. The ribbon consists of three equal stripes of black, white and pale brown.
The Central Africa Medal 1891-98 was established in 1895 and awarded to combatants, in silver, and non-combatants, in bronze. The medal was awarded for service in a number of punitive expeditions, including a some aimed at suppressing the slave trade.
In 1903, Nderamani served with the King's African Rifles in Somaliland where he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for attempting to save a wounded British officer. He went on to serve in World War One (1914-1918).
