Africa General Service Medal 1902-56, with clasp, 'Somaliland 1902-04', Sergeant Nderamani, King's African Rifles
Circular silver campaign medal with a portrait of King Edward VII facing left, with, on the obverse, the Latin inscription, 'Edwardvs VII Rex Imperator' (Edward VII King Emperor). On the reverse, designed by George de Saulles, a figure of Britannia, a lion at her feet, holds a palm branch and scroll, symbols of peace and law, in one hand and a trident in the other, with the inscription, 'Africa' in the exergue below. The edge of the medal is inscribed with the number, rank, name and unit of the recipient.
Nderamani received the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for his actions at Daratoleh in Somaliland, on 22 April 1903. During a rearguard action, Nderamani assisted in an attempt to save a wounded British officer, Captain Charles Bruce of the Royal Field Artillery. The action resulted in the award of three Victoria Crosses, to Captain William Walker, Brevet Major John Gough and Captain George Rolland. Nderamani and Corporal Surmoni of the King's African Rifles and Sowar Umar Ismail of the Somaliland Camel Corps, were awarded Distinguished Conduct Medals and Lance-Naik Maieya Singh of the British Central Africa Indian Contingent received the Sikh Order of Merit.
