Brigadier-General Francis Gleadowe Stone, Army Staff, 1900 (c)
Miniature, watercolour on ivory, artist unknown, 1900 (c).
This portrait, set in a rectangular brass frame with a suspension loop at the top, was probably painted at the same time as Brigadier-General Stone's (1857-1929) son, Robert Graham William Hawkins Stone (also held in the NAM collection). They travelled to South Africa together to fight in the Boer War of 1899-1902. In 1884, Francis married Celine Cloete who was born in the Cape of Good Hope, so there was a family connection with South Africa.
