Interior of a Pig: 'Belfast Welsh Guards Easter Monday Armoured Ambulance. Humber 1. ton', 12 April 1971
Carbon, black ink wash and pastels by Ralph Lillford, 1971.
The Humber 1-ton armoured personnel carrier or 'Pig' became the most common armoured vehicle to be used by the British Army in Northern Ireland, being readily adapted for a variety of roles, including medical evacuation. Originally designed for service in the Malayan Emergency of 1948-1957, by the early 1960s it had been declared obsolete. Many had to be brought out of storage, or retrieved from scrap yards.
Between 1971 and 1976, drawn by an interest in the civil conflict, Ralph Lillford made repeated trips to Northern Ireland to draw what he saw in the streets.
