Haversack, US Army, 1944 (c)

This cotton haversack, pictured with first aid pouch, webbing cartridge belt, shovel with cover, and bandolier, was made by the Atlas Manufacturing Company. It was used by a soldier of the American 29th Infantry Division during World War Two (1939-1945).

The 29th was a National Guard division from Maryland and Virginia. Known informally as 'England's Own' it was posted to England in 1942. Initially stationed at Tidworth, it later undertook coast watch duties in Devon and Cornwall. In June 1944, the 29th Division formed part of the first wave of landings in the 'Easy Red' sector of OMAHA Beach.
