In July 1803 the then Major Halkett assisted Liutenent-Colonel Von der Decken in establishing the King's German Legion (KGL). He later led the 2nd Light Battalion in Hanover and Copenhagen before leading the Light Brigade of the KGL in the Peninsula. At Waterloo he commanded the 5th Brigade in the 3rd Division, under the command of Major-General Carl von Alten.
