'Returning from the trenches the soldiers take a bath', 1915

Photograph, World War One, Gallipoli (1915).

The soldiers at Gallipoli lived and fought in appalling conditions. The heat, dust and disease took a toll on the men and after long spells in the trenches a dip in the nearby sea would have been most welcome. This however was not always possible as the Turks regularly shelled the beaches at Anzac, Cape Helles and Suvla Bay.

One of 138 postcard photographs, probably collected by a member of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, World War One, 1915-1917.
