Propaganda leaflet, Korean War, 1952 (c)
Leaflet printed for distribution to North Korean forces, inducing them to surrender and offering safe conduct, 1952 (c).
One side shows an officer or commissar with a pistol goading Korean or Chinese forces forward into battle; a standard bearer with the Chinese flag can be seen in the distance. On the other side North Korean or Chinese soldiers are encouraged to surrender and cross over to the United Nations lines.
After World War Two (1939-1945) Korea was split into the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea). In 1950, North Korea declared war on South Korea and the United Nations Security Council called on its members to support the Republic of Korea, with American troops being the first to arrive. They were later joined by troops from other nations including the British. Around 60,000 members of the British armed forces served in Korea, many of whom were National Servicemen.
