Letter from Lieutenant Standish O'Grady to his father the 1st Viscount Guillamore, 16 April 1814
This letter, postmarked St Mauvaisin, was written shortly after the Battle of Toulouse (10 April 1814). O'Grady mentions that he has seen an official account of Napoleon's abdication and hopes that the war may soon be put to an end. He recounts that their losses at Toulouse were around 5,000 and that Colonel Vivian was seriously wounded (presumably in the action at Croix d'Orade on 8 April) and may lose his right arm. His troop now has orders to patrol the River Garonne.
From a collection of 45 letters associated with Lieutenant-Colonel Standish O'Grady, later 2nd Viscount Guillamore, 1813-1830. These include those written whilst serving as a lieutenant with the 7th Light Dragoons in the Peninsular War (1808-1814) and at Waterloo (1815).
