Letter from Captain Standish O'Grady to his father the 1st Viscount Guillamore, 25 October 1815
In this letter, postmarked Yvetot, O'Grady reveals he has just returned from Brighton via Dieppe, having shared the journey with a Lady Cahir (later Countess Glengall?) and her daughter. O'Grady complains of his poor health, stating that he cannot spend a damp winter in France. He suggests that his regiment will be returned to Brighton in which case he intends to stay with the 7th Hussars. He mentions that the 10th Hussars are due to go to Ireland. There is some society gossip, including the news that General Peregrine Maitland had eloped with Lady Sarah Lennox who Maitland married at the Duke of Wellington's headquarters on 9 October 1815, despite opposition from her family.
From a collection of 45 letters associated with Lieutenant-Colonel Standish O'Grady, later 2nd Viscount Guillamore 1813-1830. These include several written while serving as a lieutenant with the 7th Light Dragoons in the Peninsular War (1808-1814) and at Waterloo (1815).
