Field Marshal Sir Archibald Wavell, the Vicreoy of India, presents the Victoria Cross to a Gurkha. Wavell had been appointed Viceroy in 1943. His mandate in India was to maintain political stability during the war and he remained in the post until he was replaced by Lord Mountbatten of Burma in 1947.
