L85A1 SA80 5.56 mm individual weapon, 1988
Versions of the SA80 have been the British Army's standard combat weapon since 1985. The 1980s version carried during the Gulf War (1990-1991) was found lacking in desert conditions, so by the time of the later operations in Iraq (2003-2011) it had been substantially upgraded.
