'Detachment of the D.C.L.I. under Capt Eveleigh', Burma, 1891
Photograph by Felice Beato (1832-1909), Burma (Myanmar), 1891.
A unit of Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry under the command of Captain Charles Newman Everleigh with elephants, temples and pagodas in the background.
After the British Empire annexed Upper Burma in 1885, the town of Wuntho became a refuge for Burmese rebels and groups of dacoits. This continued until 1891 when a force of around 1,800 British and Indian soldiers under General Sir George Wolseley occupied the area.
From an album of photographs relating to the Wuntho Expedition in Upper Burma under the command of Brigadier General Sir George Benjamin Wolseley (1839-1921), 1891.
