Embarkation of 2nd Mountain Battery Royal Artillery on board the BGS 'Patrick', 1885 (c)
.Photograph, 3rd Burma War (1885-1886).
Departing from British-controlled Rangoon (Yangon), Anglo-Indian forces sailed up the River Irrawaddy towards Mandalay. Using around 50 low-draft steamers, many of which towed barges, they advanced at such a speed that the Burmese had little chance to organise effective resistance. Mandalay was occupied on 28 November 1885 and the Burmese capitulated soon after.
From an album of photographs relating to the Wuntho Expedition in Upper Burma under the command of Brigadier General Sir George Benjamin Wolseley (1839-1921), 1891.
