Mountain artillery, India, North West Frontier, 1927
Photograph, 1927.
An assembled 3.7 inch howitzer. Designed for use in rugged terrain this mountain artillery piece could be broken down and carried on eight mules. The howitzer could be assembled or disassembled in a matter of minutes by a well trained crew. The 3.7 inch howitzer was introduced in 1917 and saw considerable service on the North West Frontier of India between the World Wars.
From a collection of photographs collected by Brigadier Sir Francis Smith Reid (1900-1970), 1918-1955.
