Bronze six-pounder muzzleloading cannon, 1794 (c)
Cast in London by Francis Kinman in 1794, this cannon is inscribed with foundry number XXVI and trunnion number J67. It also bears the royal cypher of King George III and the monogram of the Duke of Richmond. As Master General of the Ordnance from 1794 to 1795, Richmond was responsible for the supply of weapons to the Army and Navy.
This gun was loaded from the front of the barrel with a shot that weighed around 6 pounds (2.7kg). The bronze barrel was mounted on a two-wheeled carriage. Its light weight meant that it could be moved quickly on the battlefield, providing support to cavalry.
