Coatee with Company Officer's epaulettes worn by Surgeon Christopher Bakewell Bassano, 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot, 1845 (c)
Christopher Bakewell Bassano (1824-1856) joined the 70th (The Surrey) Regiment of Foot as an assistant surgeon on 22 December 1848. He was appointed a staff surgeon, second class on 10 August 1855 whereupon he travelled to the Crimea. He died at Balaklava on 1 February 1856. His coatee, with company officer's epaulettes, is of the standard pattern worn by the officers of infantry regiments; the distinguishing colour of the cuffs and the device on the buttons would have marked Bassano out as belonging to the Surreys.
