Sinope, 1857
Watercolour by William Simpson (1823-1899), 1857.
The Black Sea port of Sinope was the scene of a major naval battle on 30 November 1853 when the Turkish fleet was destroyed by the Russian Navy while anchored in the harbour. The Russian victory was a contributory factor in making France and Britain enter the Crimean War (1854-1856) on the Turkish side.
