The 12th (Service) Battalion was formed in Bristol at the end of August 1914 as part of Kitchener's 'New Army'. It was known as the 'new Bristol Battalion, or 'Bristol's Own' and formed part of the Gloucestershire Regiment. It landed in France on 21 November 1915 and fought the rest of the First World War on the Western Front, being disbanded there in October 1918.

The mixture of civilian clothes and uniform, as well as suitcases indicates this image was taken soon after joining.
