Beret, Major (later Brigadier) Peter Young, No 3 Commando, 1944
Green wool cloth with metal thread badge.
Peter Young wore this beret whilst commanding No 3 Commando during the Normandy Campaign in World War Two (19139-1945). Number 3 Commando was part of 1st Special Service Brigade. Four of these brigades were formed in 1944.
The badge includes a representation of the Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife, with which all commandos were issued. The twin 'S' on either side of the badge denotes 'Special Service Brigade'. They were renamed 'Commando Brigades' in December 1944, and the badge discontinued after then.
