Japanese sentry among barbed wire entanglements, Tsingtao, November 1914

A Japanese soldier stands guard in the Tsingtao (Qingdao) defences following its capture by the Allies on 7 November 1914. Around 1,500 British and 20,000 Japanese troops had besieged the German naval base for the previous two months.

From an album of 24 photographs presented to Brig Gen, later Maj Gen, Nathaniel Walter Barnardiston.
