Mauser M1896 7 mm bolt action rifle, 1899 (c)
The Boer republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State purchased around 50,000 Mauser M1896 rifles and carbines to equip their forces. This particular Boer carbine has the inscription 'B C Hartingh, Utrecht' carved into its butt. It came to the National Army Museum via the Middlesex Regimental Museum Collection and was probably a souvenir or trophy from the Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa.
