The 57th was originally raised as the 59th Regiment of Foot in 1755. Renumbered as the 57th Regiment of Foot, the regiment served in the American War of Independence (1775-1783). In 1782, incorporating a county affiliation, the regiment was renamed the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot. After service in Nova Scotia, the 57th fought in the Wars of the French Revolution and the Peninsular War (1808-1814). In Spain, in 1811, at the bloody Battle of Albuera, the 57th gained it's nickname, 'The Die Hards'.

After further service in North America, Australia and India the Regiment fought in the Crimean War in 1854, the Indian Mutiny in 1858, and in New Zealand in the early 1860s. The unit moved to Ceylon in 1873 and in 1879 sailed to South Africa to participate in the Zulu War. In 1881 the regiment was amalgamated with the 77th (East Middlesex) Regiment, to form the Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment).
