Tank suit, universal pattern, Royal Armoured Corps, 1945

Fawn cotton oversuit with flannel collar and lining, made by P S and J Ellis Limited, Leeds, 1945.

This heavy cotton protective garment was introduced in July 1943, during World War Two (1939-1945), as a functional item of clothing for men serving in tank units. The tank suit, known as a 'pixie suit', had a detachable hood (missing on this example) and strong shoulder straps that could be used to pull an individual out of his tank in an emergency. It was also a highly desirable item as it could be converted into a sleeping bag.
