Jimson the mule, 1904 (c)
Photograph, 1904 (c).
After serving in India in the 1890s and then South Africa during the Boer War (1899-1902), Jimson was promoted to become regimental mascot of 2nd Battalion, The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment). Quarantine restrictions meant that few horses and mules were brought home from South Africa, so the regiment would have had to get special dispensation to bring Jimson back. As he was such a brave mule, he was awarded the Indian Medal in 1895 and the two Boer War campaign medals.
From an album of 60 photographs associated with 2nd Battalion, The Middlesex Regiment.
