Meritorious Service Medal, awarded to Colour Sergeant L I Priddy, Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own), 1950 (c)
Silver medal with the uncrowned head of King George VI with the inscription, 'Georgivs VI Dei Gra Britt Omn Rex Fid Def'; on the reverse, a crowned laurel wreath inscribed "For Meritorious Service, suspended by a crimson ribbon with three white vertical stripes.
The Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) was awarded to recognise exceptionally valuable and meritorious service. Up to 1951 the award included an annuity of no more than £20 paid to non-commissioned officers for life from an annual fund of £2,000. Until this time, the MSM was constrained by the fund available, and often only awarded on the death of previous recipients. Since 1951, it has been awarded without the annuity. In 1916 a second type was introduced as an immediate award with no annuity, followed in 1917 by an extension to recognise individual acts of gallantry not in the presence of the enemy in 1917.
