Second Lieutenant Robert B Benison, 2nd Battalion Connaught Rangers, 1914 (c)
Photograph by Gale and Polden, Aldershot, 1914 (c).
Benison is pictured here in his frock coat. He was probably photographed in Aldershot where the battalion was stationed before being sent to France in August 1914 as part of the british Expeditionary Force (BEF). The battalion was soon engaged in very heavy fighting with Benison becoming one of the many men killed from the battalion. He died aged 23 on 20 September 1914. These losses were so severe that the battalion was disbanded by the end of the year, and wasn't raised again until after the First World War.
From a collection of 1701 photographs taken by Gale and Polden, Aldershot, showing British Regiments and Corps.
