Photograph, Central Office of Information, 1950 (c)-1969 (c).
Three members of the Women's Royal Army Corps being shown what is clearly a 'Drill' model of a Thunderbird surface to air missile.
English Electric, the company that made both the Canberra and Lightning jet aircraft, produced the Thunderbird. It was designed to provide ground forces and installations with a mobile air defence weapon that could eliminate enemy aircraft flying at an altitude above the effective range of anti-aircraft guns.
