Side drum, Loyal Hampstead Association, 1798
During the French Revolutionary Wars numerous Volunteer units and 'Armed Associations' were formed. Armed Associations were only expected to serve in their local area.
The Loyal Hampstead Association was an infantry unit formed in 1798 by engraver Josiah Boydell. In common with other Armed Associations, volunteers of the Loyal Hampstead Association were all considered 'well-respected gentlemen' and mostly known for their participation in dinners, contests and other social events. The unit was disbanded in 1802 as a result of the Peace of Amiens.
