Maori 'toki poto', axe, 1861

Made from an imported trade axe-head, 'toki poto' were favourite weapons of the Maoris during the Maori Wars which lasted from 1860 to 1872. This particular weapon was found in a burned out farmhouse when settlers were massacred at Kaitake, Taranaki in 1861.
