The flag is decorated with a domino, the formation badge of the 33rd British Division, to which the battalion was attached. The rifle and pick symbol denotes the battalion's pioneer status. The battalion was raised on 19 January 1915 by Lieutenant-Colonel John Ward MP and landed at Le Havre on 15 November that year.
