British graves on the Western Front
Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918).
Burying fallen servicemen on the Western Front was extremely challenging. It could usually only be undertaken when a lull in the fighting allowed the bodies to be recovered. Hastily dug graves sprung up in widely scattered and often unsuitable locations.
From an album compiled by Second Lieutenant Richard Tennant Cooper.
