The 17th (1st Football) Battalion was raised as a New Army unit in London on 12 December 1914 by W. Joynson Hicks MP. After training at Cranleigh, Clipstone Camp and Perham Down it landed at Boulogne in November 1915 with 100th Brigade. The following month it transferred to 6th Brigade in 2nd Division.
