Coast Artillery gun crews were often employed working on either concrete gun positions, and also stood on steel parts of guns and mountings. These shoes were designed to stop them from slipping, which could occur with standard issue leather boots with steel hob nails.

These overshoes became obsolete on the abolition of Coast Artillery in 1956.
