Side drum, 3rd Battalion, 4th (or The King's Own) Regiment of Foot, 1799 (c)

Front of drum painted dark, possibly royal blue, decorated with crowned garter with the royal cypher of King George III and regimental name. Flesh hoops and drum heads whole. Ten holes with brass joining plate; plain drag rope over four cords. Three ball legs on lower hoop.

A presentation inscription on a brass plate on the drum refers to its use during the 'Walcheren Expedition in 1799', presumably the Helder Expedition (1799) rather than the Walcheren Expedition of 1809.

The drum was presented to 1st Battalion, the King's Own Regiment by Major (later Lieutenant Colonel) John Moore Gawne (1854-1900), in 1900. Later that same year, on 12 December 1900, Gawne died of wounds received the previous day on 'Lancaster Hill', Vryheid, South Africa, during the Boer War (1899-1902).
