Martini-Enfield Artillery Carbine, Mark I .303 inch, 1897
Made at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield, 1884.
From 1888 the standard issue Martini-Henry rifle was being replaced in the British Army by the more modern Lee-Metford rifle. Old stocks of Martini action rifles were cut down and modified to provide carbines for supporting corps and auxiliary force units.
This carbine was converted from Martini-Henry Mark III rifle in 1897 and barrelled to .303 inch calibre. The brass issue roundel shows that it was issued to the Army Service Corps. It was subsequently sold out of service for cadet use.
