German 1 litre 'Stein' (beer mug), 1917 (c)

Glazed stoneware mug, maker unknown. It is inscribed, '1914- [Maltese Cross] -1917' and 'Heeresgruppe Kronpr. Rupprecht von Bayern'.

The mug commemorates Rupprecht, the Crown Prince of Bavaria, Commander of the German 6th Army. It was probably taken as a trophy by a member of the Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment) on the Western Front during World War One (1914-1918).
