Interior of the Malakoff with remains of the Tower, looking towards the Mamelon, 12 September 1855

Photograph by James Robertson (1813-1888), Crimean War (1854-1856), 1855.

The Malakhov was one of the key Russian defences at the Siege of Sevastopol. Its stone tower rested on earthworks and there were artillery batteries on either side of the tower. The French successfully assaulted the Malakhov on 8 September 1855, an act that marked the effective end of the siege.

From a Crimean War scrapbook belonging to Major (later Colonel) George Harry Smith Willis, 77th Foot (East Middlesex) Regiment of Foot, 1854-1856 (c).
