Green Hill Battery, Left Flank of the British Position, facing the Redan, June 1855

Photograph by James Robertson (1813-1888), Crimean War, 1855.

The Redan was one of Sevastopol's two major forts. The British made two assaults on this key position simultaneously with the French attacks on the Malakhov fort. Both British assaults were disastrous failures. This was seen as a humiliation in light of the French success at the Malakhov.

From a Crimean War scrapbook belonging to Major (later Colonel) George Harry Smith Willis, 77th Foot (East Middlesex) Regiment of Foot, 1854-1856 (c).
