This portrait of Bobby was painted posthumously from a photograph. He was killed in action on 20 November 1917 whilst serving with the 16th (Service) Battalion (Public Schools), The Duke of Cambridge's (Middlesex) Regiment. The latter unit was a New Army formation established in London on 1 September 1914 by Lieutenant-Colonel J J Mackay. In November 1917 it was serving with 86th Brigade of 29th Division.
