Mittens with removable finger piece, Auxiliary Territorial Service, 1944 (c)
War Department issue in suede, made by G Waddington and Son Limited, 1943.
These mittens were often paired with a 'teddy bear coat' which was worn by, among others, members of the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) when serving on anti-aircraft defences during World War Two (1939-1945). Around 56,000 members of the ATS served on these defences alongside men operating search lights, radar equipment and measuring range and height of aircraft.
