Other ranks' cap badge, Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's), 1940 (c)

This badge includes the stringed bugle horn characteristic of all British light infantry units. Between the strings the initials 'PA' are visible. These stand for Prince Albert. Above the bugle is a crown superscribed 'Jellalabad' on a scroll. This honour commemorates the three-month defence of Jellalabad during the 1st Afghan War (1839-1842). In recognition of the latter service, Queen Victoria renamed the regiment after her husband, Prince Albert.
