Officer's Full Dress Shako of the 6th Bengal European Regiment, 1858
In 1857 there were three regiments of European infantry in the Bengal Presidency, but on 3 September 1858, to make up the deficiencies caused by the mutinies among the Bengal native troops, three further European regiments were formed. The 6th were initially based at Hazaribagh in Bihar, a state where some of the last rebel partisans of the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) were operating on the Nepal border.
