Cavalry patrolling in eastern Persia, 1916
Photograph, World War One, Persia (1914-1918).
Despite Persia being neutral in the war, British and Russian troops occupied parts of the country. One British force formed a cordon along its eastern border against German and Turkish agents who were intent on encouraging anti-British unrest in Afghanistan and on the North West Frontier of India.
From an album of 65 photographs compiled by Captain Edward 'Ned' Lorimer, Special Squadron 37th Lancers, later 'C' Squadron 41st Cavalry, East Persia, 1916 (c).
