General Walter Congreve (1862-1927) inspecting the 9th Hodson's Horse in Egypt in 1920.
The 9th Hodson's Horse was deployed to the Middle East in 1918 and remained in the region until December 1920.
General Sir Walter Norris Congreve (1862-1927) commanded the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from 1919 to 1923. Congreve was a veteran of the Boer War (1899-1902). He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry during the Battle of Colenso on 15 December 1899. Congreve was a corps commander on the Western Front during World War One (1914-1918) and lost a hand in the conflict. Congreve's son, William, served with the Rifle Brigade on the Somme in 1916, and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. After his time in Egypt Congreve served as Governor of Malta.
