Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916.
The village of Maricourt was situated near the point in the Allied line where the British and French positions met. During the opening weeks of the Somme offensive it was the location for a military cemetery. After the war, a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery (Peronne Road Cemetery, Maricourt) was built on the site.
