Flying goggles used by the Royal Flying Corps, 1917 (c)
The aircraft and balloons of the Royal Flying Corps were the eyes of the British Army, directing artillery fire and observing enemy positions. Aircraft cockpits were exposed to the weather so protective clothing and goggles were worn by plots and observers.
