Shovel, 1910
The use of machine guns and the increasing power and accuracy of modern artillery created an industrialised battlefield that forced soldiers to 'dig in' to survive. Soldiers carried small entrenching tools as part of their kit. But units also took shovels into the line for larger digging tasks.
