Scottish broadsword, 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameron Highlanders), 1806 (c)

Made by J J Runkel of Solingen, the sword is dated pre-1808.

The first Pattern basket-hilted sword was authorised in 1789. Weapons such as this were termed 'broadswords' to distinguish them from slim bladed rapier-type swords. The 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameron Highlanders) were raised in 1793.
