Formation badge, 79th Armoured Division, 1942 (c)
In 1943 the 79th Armoured Division, under the command of Major-General Percy Hobart, became a unit specialising in armoured assault. The unit's modified armoured vehicles, mostly Churchill and Sherman tanks, became known as 'Hobart's Funnies'. They included vehicles designed to eliminate mine fields and pillboxes and deliver assault bridges and fascines. The Division played a major part in the Normandy Landings on D-Day, 6 June 1944 supporting British and Commonwealth forces.
